LTP 8- Redefining the Family and Mission (with guest Dave Rhodes)

By November 11, 2015 One Comment

What’s the best way to live?  By re-defining what “Family” is and what “Mission” is and then learning how to integrate the two… for a powerful new way to live.

Here is a brief summary of today’s episode of “The Live True Podcast.”  You can use this as a reference or reminder of key things you feel like you need to pay attention to or pass on to others, in the next 7 days of your life.

Most of us value the WHAT of our life over the WHO of our life. That happens when we make decisions concerning our WHAT before our WHO.

* Our WHO has to do with an extended family (often not biological family, but can include parts of it) given to us to experience the relational community we yearn for.  WHO is about family.

* Our WHAT has to do with the job or mission we’ve been given in the world. Everything in the marketplace has a higher purpose than what we first imagined.  WHAT is about function.

* Learn to value the WHO in your life prior to the WHAT for your life.  When we get the WHO right, it will then inform the WHAT.  Then there can be an ongoing calibration of these two elements.

* Jesus formed a new family after being rejected by his biological one.

Notice how He redefines His family (WHO) in Mark 3:33-34 as those who do the work of God together… when faith is thicker than blood.

Jesus responded, “Who do you think are my mother and brothers?” Looking around, taking in everyone seated around him, he said, “Right here, right in front of you—my mother and my brothers. Obedience is thicker than blood. The person who obeys God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

Later Jesus’ spiritual family ended up redeeming and re-uniting his broken biological family.

* Jesus established a mission that had to do with the ‘family business.’  Our Father God has business in every part of the marketplace.  He wants His nature and kingdom represented in: education, healthcare, entertainment; sports, etc. Everyday He is sending us out to represent His love and His healing.

* Mission is seeing what God is doing in the part of the ‘world’ He has placed you in and then joining Him in what He is doing there.  But not doing it alone.  But doing it as ‘family.’

* The Church MUST be re-imagined.

* Keep the WHO at the same level as the WHAT.  Quality of life is not just about having the right WHAT- job or mission.  It’s also about WHO we ‘do life with’ knowing that they are helpers that are suitable to work and play with us, in each dimension of our lives.

* The Rhodes Family mission statement:  “We show and tell people about Jesus.”

* How can you integrate family with mission so that you become a part of a family on mission?  How can you develop lifestyle rhythms that allow you to participate in being a “Family on Mission?”  Listen to this podcast to find out how.

Our favorite part of doing these podcasts is participating in the conversation they provoke. Each week, we’ll ask one question. This week, it is this:

Question: “Have you placed the WHAT of your life above your WHO? Have you discovered a way of integrating both of them?”
