“No good can come from watering last years crops.” Francis Anfuso

We do it all the time. We tend phantom crops in the non-existent fields of our past. That awful moment, that loss, that person who slighted us or rejected us or abandoned us- we can’t get it out of our mind. We replay it over and over. Though it happened months or even years ago it still seems real. We can’t let it go.

When we get triggered by a painful moment in our past it’s so tempting to bring out the hose, and water those memories that are now only “real” in our minds. Our minds have a heyday with our imagination.

Research tells us our brains have been “trained”

for thousands of years to fixate on the negative.

Yes, that thing did happen to us. At the time, the incident was real. And, if we didn’t sufficiently grieve or deal with our pain we may need to tend to those feelings for a good amount of time. We highly recommend getting professional help processing them. But it’s up to us how long we will suffer.

Rehearsing and nursing your wounds never heals them.

It only increases your suffering.

Keep your mind and heart tuned into this present moment and the past can no longer bother you. One way you can derail your hijacked anger, resentment, or sadness is by simply using your breath. Stop painful thoughts by focusing on your breath as it comes in and out. Your brain is only able to focus on one activity at a time. It has to drop the thought the thought once you move your focus to your breath.

Try it. Think about something for a minute or so then switch to paying attention to your breath. Do this every time your mind tries to take you where you really don’t want to go.

God is the same yesterday, today and forever but God is only alive with us now, at THIS moment. Breath, another word for “spirit” perfectly tunes us into now where all is truly well. It’s a built-in “peacekeeper.”

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

No good can come from watering last years crops.
