“A humble self-knowledge is a surer way to God than deep learning.” Thomas A Kempis

At first glance, this advice seems all wrong-headed. How can knowing ourselves be a truer way to God than deep, investigative study of God?

Here is what we are learning:  a clear assessment of our own raggedy-edged humanity shows us our deep need for God, and, in turn,  keeps us connected to God.

More God-facts can puff us up intellectually and fool us into thinking we have actually experienced God. But a humble self-awareness keeps us, not in shame, but in greater self-clarity and gratefulness of God’s compassion for us and connection to us.

If you are an avid God-student you are headed in the right direction- just don’t stop there. Many well-intentioned, spiritually learned people have lost their way. True spiritual transformation comes at the intersection of God Knowledge and self-knowledge.

So, how do we gain more self -knowledge?

1) Pay close attention to the hard or what you might think are conflicting things someone close has been trying to tell you about yourself.

2) Ask a trusted friend to be honest about one or two negative things you want to avoid seeing about yourself which appears obvious to everyone else.

3) Take a personal assessment such as the Enneagram. It will help you discover both the gifts you bring to the world as well as your negative, compulsive personality patterns that keep you blind to your unhealthy ways of being and relating.

We are certified Enneagram specialists and we can set you up with a test and consultation to help you identify several key aspects of your behavior that, without you fully realizing it, may be working against your best interests.  If you want to know more CLICK HERE.
